Layered backgrounds

I was inspired by a card in Stamp it! this month. Janice Tinklenberg made a stunning card using the Fabulous set and Paisley background stamp. I have seen this technique before, it is similar to Joseph's coat but without the embossing. First you stamp your background stamp onto glossy paper and then stamp a bold image over that with versamark ink. Let the Vmark dry for a minute and then brayer a coordinating color over the entire card. (In Joseph's coat you emboss the vmark with clear powder) The Vmark will resist the brayered ink and the design from the background stamp will show through.
I wanted to try it just a bit differently....no surprise there, so after stamping my background I used a line image instead of a bold image. This stamp is a hostess stamp this year called In the Garden. You have seen me show other projects with it. I love it! I planned on coloring in the flower with the Versamarker so I stamped the flower with black Staz On in the hopes that it would not smear. No such luck! I'm not sure why it smeared, but it did. So, plan B! I stamped the flower onto scrap paper and cut it out, making a mask. Then I brayered ink over that. That worked fairly well, but left quite a halow around my flower that I didn't really like. Out came the markers! I used the same color marker, eggplant, and filled in around the flower where the 'halo' was. Now, I had a dark halo. sigh, I ended up coloring in everywhere the brayer had gone. I ended up with a really dark background that isn't quite perfect around my flower. BUT, just look at the flower with it's inner design and over look the background. Oooh, aaahh,...;o)
I mounted my flower onto apricot cardstock and then onto a white card base. The "friendship" is from the Tres Chic background stamp. I did add a bit of dazzling diamonds to the center of the flower...in an attempt to save it.
So, now you know. We all have those days when things just don't go quite as we want them to but hopefully, we learn a little something along the way. Have a good one!

Doubles with candy!!

Today is another fun summer day at my house. The kids are running here and there and I'm just trying to keep up. I realized I hadn't sent out Father's day cards yet, so that is what I worked on today. I tried to keep these nice and clean and manly. I remember going to a demonstration at a Stampin' Up! convention years ago where Kevin Theeson and another guy(I forget his name....) talked about 'manly' cards. One of the things they stressed was that guys don't like cards made with pastel cards. They prefer bold bright and earth element colors. I'm not sure if they suggested we stay away from florals too, but I kind of figured that was a safe idea. ;o) For this card I started with some textured Wild Wasabi cardstock cut to 10-1/2 x 5-1/4. That gave me a 5-1/4" card when folded. The striped paper across the center is from a retired SU simply scrappin kit...primary colors I think it was called.
