Challenge Friday!

Today the challenge was to make a card using the Happy Birthday card on the front of the Sale-a-bration brochure as our template. I fudged just a little by making my card a square. Hope that is okay! I just needed more room! I made my card base out of Close to cocoa and Regal Rose I stamped my new Save the Date calendar with close to cocoa and stamped the dots with Pretty in Pink. Uh oh....I did another pink and brown card! LOL Maybe next week the challenge should be to do a "not pink and brown card!" just for me! oh well.... The flowers are from the new SAB set. I stamped them with cocoa and colored them in with Regal rose marker. I stamped the smaller flower from the set using my marker and cut them out. I used a pink brad in the center to hold the two flowers together and added a bit of dazzling diamonds to the centers of the petals. "Celebrate" and the swirlies are stamped with craft white. I stamped "today" with my regal rose marker and punched it out with the 1 inch circle punch. I drug the edge of the circle across my cocoa pad to give it a border. I was trying to imitate the circles on the calendar. Instead of a zigzag cut alon gthe right side, I stapled a strip of white rick rack on there. The pink ribbon is our new pink tafetta....love it!

Yesterday was a big day for my E. He had an awards assembly at school and got an award for being a super reader! They have an AR program where the kids read books from a list and then take tests on them to see how well they comprehend what they read. He really did awesome last semester. He just kind of exploded in the reading area. I think it is great! He would get off the school bus with his Nate the Great book in front of his face as he walked. He had to be careful not to fall off the bus! He slowed down a bit over the Holiday break but I think this award will kick him up again. He also had his first practice run for his first Pinewood Derby. I love the PWD! It is a great way to teach kids (and their parents) good sportsmanship. The only thing I DON'T like is when the parents make the cars for the kids. You know who you are....the kid with the totally tricked out car that was obviously done with power tools. It makes me wonder if the boy actually got to even Hold the car before the race let alone make it. The rules are never inforced...car must be made by the scout without any power tools....yeah, right. OKAY! I admit it! I used a power tool this time! We were so busy, it got down to the day before the race and we hadn't even started on the car. I tried several very dull saws to cut the tiny little block of wood on the line that E had drawn and....well, I decided I would rather have fingers at the end of the day. So, we took it down the street to our neighbor and had him cut the ONE diagonal cut for us. The rest was just sanding and painting and decorating. Oh, and the adding on loads of weights to make up for all that wood we cut off....Anyway! he did really great and finished third!
